We had a fantastic stay at this hostel. The location was perfect, being really close to the subway station and right across the river. It was also conveniently located near public transport, making it easy to explore the city. The hotel facilities were great, with a spacious private room and comfortable showers. The staff were friendly and helpful, making our stay even more enjoyable.
Can't fault the property in any way.

Great location with really friendly staff. It is above a sake bar which is also owned by the hostel so you can try lots of sake and they definitely know what they are talking about. Beds are comfortable and rooms are nice.
Only 2 showers for the whole hostel which meant waiting a bit (although not that long) each morning. The hostel is next to a private subway which isnt easy to find from kyoto station, but thats more a quirk of japan subways.

I recently stayed at Jam Hostel Gion for a few nights and it was perfect for my solo travel adventure. The location was fantastic, just a short walk to Shijo station and close to all the major sites like Yasaka shrine, Hokanji temple, and Nishiki Market. The beds were comfortable and there was a great sake bar below the hostel. The owner was friendly and gave deals on sake to guests. The property was secure with a keypad entry system. Checking out was a breeze and I appreciated being able to leave my luggage at the hostel. I would definitely stay here again!
Totally recommend this hotel.

Great value for the money, the room was comfy and clean. The location was fantastic, with easy access to transportation and within walking distance of Gion Matsuri. The staff were mostly nice and helpful, even recommending their favorite ramen spot.
The breakfast menu could use some improvement, maybe offering a wider variety of options.

The location of this hostel was excellent, with easy walking access to downtown, Kyoto station area, and Southern Higashiyama. The hostel provided a convenient outlet for plugging in electronics in the top bunk and allowed me to drop off my luggage in the morning before check-in. The showers were clean and the value for money was good.
Felt like home, no complaints at all.

Good points are the excellent location and the price. The hostel is new (it was opened in july 2012) so facilities are all brand new and clean.
Rooms (at least our room) are tiny and with a tiny window that was like a basement. The hostel has no common room to have a rest and stay a while, just a small room in the 3rd floor with a fridge and a table. There is a sake bar in the 1st floor that it is used as the living room. Showers are on the 3rd floor, so if you are on the 2nd floor you need to go upstairs to take a shower. In the second floor there was not even a basin to brush your teeth. To get to the rooms there is a tiny stair quite difficult to climb with the suitcase. They did not send me an email of confirmation for my reservation, so i had to write to them again in order to know if the reservation was ok and to get the indications of how to get to the hostel ( the web was not working yet). The hostel was correct, but i would not recommed the place to a friend.

The Sake bar downstairs was a delightful surprise. I felt like a wine connoisseur as I tried their selection of three small glasses. It was like a mini wine tasting experience right at the hostel.
Dirty shared sink.
